Coronavirus (and 5G) will boost telecommuting, change our tech future

Disclaimer: Most of the vendors mentioned are clients of the author. While the World Health Organization (WHO) seems to be doing everything it can to keep from naming the coronavirus a pandemic, we are likely already past that point.  The combination of a long gestation period, where people are contagious but not showing symptoms, and a fatality rate that is too low to burn the virus out but too high to treat like a cold, will change behavior.  As I write this, Facebook has canceled F8; this follows the cancellation of Mobile World Congress and increasing speculation that the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo will be cancelled, too. With no immunization process yet available, we’re months away from when this illness will peak, suggesting that companies need to rethink travel, telecommuting, and even how we hold meetings on-site. To read this article in full, please click here

Enterprise resilience: iOS, Mac tools for remote collaboration

The cancellation of Mobile World Congress, the Geneva Motor Show and big-name withdrawals from other key industry events in response to the Coronavirus means every enterprise should put remote working and collaboration systems in place. This is not a drill I’m no expert, but the disease, appears to be characterized by high infection rates and a mortality rate ten times higher than standard flu. International response is not unified, some seem in denial, and the facts are becoming confused within the clamor. To read this article in full, please click here

Google plugs for Chrome when Edge accesses search firm's services

Google has posted warnings and alerts targeting Microsoft Edge on several of its services' websites, including the Chrome Web Store add-on market, Google Drive, Gmail and the company's default search page, google.com.It's not uncommon for Google to flag rival browsers with messages that recommend a user download Chrome to access the search company's services. In the past, while it was building its now-dominant position in the browser space, Google targeted Mozilla's Firefox and Microsoft's Internet Explorer (IE) with such pop-ups. At times, rival browser makers have also countered Google with similar you-should-really-switch-from-Chrome tactics. To read this article in full, please click here

Microsoft looks to give Yammer a new lease of life; can it?

While Teams may be the focal point of Microsoft’s current collaboration strategy these days, Yammer — the enterprise social network it acquired in 2012 for $1.2 billion — hasn’t been exactly left for dead.In fact, Microsoft unveiled a complete redesign of the enterprise social network at last year’s Ignite conference, offering up a new user interface based on Microsoft’s Fluent Design system, smart news feed recommendations, and tighter integration with Outlook, SharePoint and, of course, Teams. To read this article in full, please click here

Flashback Friday: Snow job

This pilot fish runs a small computer store where all repairs come with a guarantee: “If you experience any problems within two weeks of completion, bring it in and we will take a second look with no additional labor charges,” says fish.So it is that, shortly after a big snowstorm, fish gets a call from a customer who has recently brought in his PC to get rid of a virus infestation.Customer explains that, in the time since fish worked on his computer, he’s no longer able to get his CD-ROM drive to read disks. That doesn’t seem likely to be connected to the customer’s original problem, but the guarantee is the guarantee. So fish says, sure, bring your computer back in and we’ll take another look at it.To read this article in full, please click here

Give Google Docs a distraction-free upgrade

I don't know about you, but I spend a shockingly high amount of my life staring at the Google Docs interface.Docs is where I write all of my columns and articles along with other assorted musings. And by and large, it's an ideal environment for me to transfer thoughts from my noggin onto the screen: It's fully featured enough to do everything I want and yet simple enough to be easy to use. And, of course, all of my work is constantly saved, instantly available on my phone (or any other device I happen to be using), and automatically connected to the rest of the Google ecosystem in some pretty helpful ways.Still, I can't help but feel the occasional tinge of envy when I see people talking about their super-minimalist, distraction-free writing apps — those canvas-like surfaces for scribbling words in a serene setting, with an eye-pleasing color scheme and no on-screen commands to steal away focus. Whenever I see one of those interfaces and then go back to Docs, I'm suddenly all too aware of the fact that I'm working in an overly sterile word processor instead of the spa-like oasis of a writing app.To read this article in full, please click here

How and why you need HomeKit-secured smart homes

Once upon a time the Internet was amazing, enabling niche interests and connecting people. These days hackers break into home networks using our routers and smart home devices, which is why everyone must learn how to use HomeKit-secured routers to keep their connected homes safe.Apple announced HomeKit-secured routers at WWDC 2019. Android file management: An easy-to-follow guide

When you think about your smartphone, apps and interfaces are probably the first things that come to mind. Beneath all that surface-level stuff, though, our modern mobile devices are filled with files — folders upon folders of 'em! — just like the clunky ol' computers we've relied upon for ages.We may not come face to face with our phones' file systems too often, but it's valuable to know they're there — and to know how they can work for us when the need arises. After all, your Android device is a productivity powerhouse. It can juggle everything from PDFs and PSDs to presentations and podcasts. It can even act as a portable hard drive and house any sort of important files you might need in your pocket (and not just on some far-away cloud). Your mobile device can carry an awful lot of data, and there may come a time when you want to dig in and deal directly with it.To read this article in full, please click here

iPhone 9 release and high end vs. low end smartphones

Apple is rumored to announce its new, lower end iPhone at the end of March. Modeled after the iPhone 8, the iPhone 9 (or maybe it'll be called the iPhone SE 2) will offer consumers a cheaper alternative to the higher-end iPhone 11 or iPhone 11 Pro. Reintroducing its lower-end phone puts Apple in line with its Android competitors, many of which offer lower-end, high quality phones.. Macworld's Michael Simon joins Juliet and Ken to discuss the pros and cons of buying a cheaper smartphone and what they expect the upcoming iPhone 9 to look like. Firefox starts switching on DNS-over-HTTPS to encrypt lookups, stymie tracking

Mozilla has started to turn on DNS-over-HTTPS, or DoH, as part of its overall strategy of stressing user privacy."We know that unencrypted DNS is not only vulnerable to spying but is being exploited," wrote Selena Deckelmann, Mozilla's new vice president of desktop Firefox, in a Feb. 25 post to a company blog. "We are helping...to make the shift to more secure alternatives [and] do this by performing DNS lookups in an encrypted HTTPS connection. This helps hide your browsing history from attackers on the network, helps prevent data collection by third parties on the network that ties your computer to websites you visit."To read this article in full, please click here

Microsoft Patch Alert: February 2020 patches bring fire and ice but seem to have settled – finally.

The real stinker this month, KB 4524244, rolled out the automatic update chute for four full days until Microsoft yanked it – leaving a trail of wounded PCs, primarily HP machines, in its wake. The other big-time bug in this month’s patches, a race condition in the KB 4532693 Win10 version 1903 and 1909 cumulative update installer, hasn’t been officially acknowledged by Microsoft outside of a blog post. But at least it’s well known and understood.Folks running SQL Server and Exchange Server networks need to get patched right away.Win10 UEFI update KB 4524244 blockages Patch Tuesday brought KB 4524244 for Windows 10 owners, a bizarre single-purpose patch apparently directed at one specific UEFI bootloader. I talked about it last week.To read this article in full, please click here

10 steps to smarter Google account security

There are important accounts to secure, and then there are important accounts to secure. Your Google account falls into that second category, maybe even with a couple of asterisks and some neon orange highlighting added in for good measure.I mean, really: When you stop and think about how much stuff is associated with that single sign-in — your email, your documents, your photos, your files, your search history, maybe even your contacts, text messages, and location history, if you use Android — saying it's a "sensitive account" seems like an understatement. Whether you're using Google for business, personal purposes, or some combination of the two, you want to do everything you possibly can to keep all of that information locked down and completely under your control. To read this article in full, please click here

Wayback Wednesday: The joy of do-it-yourself IT

This holding company owns a handful of subsidiaries that all run independently — which keeps things interesting for an IT pilot fish who works there.“In IT, we are often told to just make it work when one company buys its own software,” fish says. “Websites are one thing that we have managed to unify, except for one company that insists on using its own provider and managing themselves.”Email for all the companies is also on fish’s servers, and that works without a hitch — at least until the day fish gets a frantic call from the subsidiary with its own website. The problem: No outside emails are arriving. After fish sits through the standard chewing-out about how the business can’t function without email, he starts testing. Sure enough, no outside email is reaching the subsidiary. It isn’t even reaching the mail servers. To read this article in full, please click here
